Congressman Gregory Meeks Targeted in Unfounded Claims by Media Sources Seeking to Draw His Attention from Pressing Community Matters – an Op-Ed by Dr. Robert Evans
While all elected officials struggle with accusations by media sources, those in Jamaica Queens have the distinct difficulty of performing their jobs while battling media sources that are constantly at their throats trying to defile their character and unfairly influence the community.
Despite such campaigns filled with negative messages that appear week after week, Congressman Gregory Meeks continues to be held in high esteem by the people of Jamaica Queens. In the middle of an economic crisis with major budget cuts to healthcare programs, Congressman Meeks strives to make sure that his time and resources are spent focusing on the community.
In the face of these unfair accusations, Congressman Meeks has still managed to aggressively support legislation to cover the nearly 44 million Americans that lack health insurance. He has worked tirelessly to ensure that our nation maintains a strong public health system – a safety net for the poor and uninsured. Recently, Meeks targeted his efforts to ensure the extension and expansion of the State Childrens’ Health Insurance Program.
Meeks will also co-chair the soon-to-be-announced Congressional Black Caucus HIV/AIDS Task Force, being organized to improve, support and increase funding for the Minority Aids Initiative. The task force will focus on addressing the crisis of emerging HIV/AIDS populations and what is expected to be a larger than expected increase in new cases in African Americans.
Unfortunately, the recent onslaught of news stories has left this 8-term congressman, a favorite of the people, with less time than he would like to respond to the community’s needs — and more time wasting energy responding to the petty accusations of the media.
While his energy should be solely focused on implementing new ideas and finding new financial models to revitalize struggling programs, Congressman Meeks must waste valuable time responding to baseless accusations.
The resources currently being used to attack this celebrated congressman could be put to good use — bettering current third world conditions in the Jamaica Queens healthcare system. Instead of spending time and energy writing stories to tear down a community official, the money would be better spent to fund the publication of inspirational stories about people in Southeast Queens who are taking care of their families in this economic disaster.
Congressman Meeks and other elected officials are purposely being distracted from their true calling to help solve the many problems our community is facing. While this issue is by no means resolved, those in power refuse to surrender. Congressman Meeks and his counterparts are absolutely determined to do their duty in the community and overcome those who seek to tear them down.
