Community Wellness Centers of America Follows the “Ideas” of “Deas”

It is no secret that Dr. Robert Evans formed the bases of his healthcare delivery model after the medical philosophy of Dr. Gerald Deas. Dr. Deas’s philosophy incorporated the development of state-of-the-art health programs and services to improve health outcomes in underserved communities and attain health equality status for the residents through increased emphasis on prevention. Dr. Evans’s medical philosophy is a clear reflection of Dr. Deas. Dr. Evans trained under Dr. Deas as medical student, medical intern and as a medical resident. Dr. Deas is not only a gifted and extraordinary internist; he is a cultivator of ideas. His ideas on the way healthcare should be delivered far exceed just patient care. His philosophy crosses over to medical policy, which is the area of study that Dr. Evans has been most influenced to pursue.

“Patient care is one of the most honorable professions, but without proper policy, the community will be short changed in the long term. Our mission is to help formulate a medical policy that gives access to quality care, eliminates health disparities, and increases the quality and years of a healthy life. Patients who are women, older, members of racial and ethnic minorities, poorer, less educated, or uninsured are less likely to receive needed care, primarily because they lack access to care,” states Dr. Evans.

For many years studies have been conducted supporting the intervention of wellness programs especially for African Americans who have the worst health status of any group of nearly all of the major health indices. Promotion of wellness programs for African American health in the community is a key element in raising the life expectancy and quality of life and providing a doorway to accessing the required medical care.

Put an “I” before the name Deas and you have “Ideas.” Community Wellness Centers of America will continue to cultivate and move these ideas to improve healthcare in a community that is facing a major medical emergency. We deserve better.
